The Choice is Yours: Natural vs. Lab Grown Diamonds

The Choice is Yours: Natural vs. Lab Grown Diamonds

Posted by Katie Clark on

When I started working in the fine jewelry industry almost a decade ago, every client I assisted with an engagement ring purchase wanted a natural diamond. I did not have anyone ask me for a lab-grown diamond until around 2022. As more and more people began asking about lab-grown diamonds, my colleagues and I brushed up on information to help our clients decide what choice was better for them: natural or lab-grown diamonds.

The decision to purchase natural or lab-grown diamonds is personal and should be weighed carefully. I always tell my clients that their choice boils down to one thing: personal preference. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds have merits and considerations that should be considered before deciding which option is better for you.

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds, are created in a laboratory using advanced technological processes replicating the natural diamond-growing environment. These man-made diamonds possess the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. However, they are distinct in origin, as they are produced under controlled conditions instead of being formed over millions of years beneath the earth's surface. This difference in creation means that lab-grown diamonds may have fewer imperfections and can be produced with minimal environmental impact compared to traditional mined diamonds.

Natural diamonds, however, are formed deep within the earth's mantle under high pressure and temperature over millions of years. When comparing the two, natural diamonds are prized for their rarity and unique characteristics. In contrast, lab-grown diamonds are valued for their ethical and sustainable production methods and often more affordable pricing. Both types of diamonds have their advantages, ultimately depending on personal preferences and values.

The buyer perceives the value of natural and lab-grown diamonds. While natural diamonds may hold sentimental or traditional value for some, others prioritize lab-grown diamonds' affordability and ethical benefits. In my years of experience, most people already have an opinion about natural or lab-grown diamonds before starting shopping. That said, learning and considering new information about these materials never hurts.

The most commonly asked questions about lab-grown diamonds are:

Q: What is the price difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?
A: Natural diamonds generally command higher prices due to their rarity and traditional market demand, but lab-grown diamonds offer a cost-effective alternative. On average, lab-grown diamonds cost 20-40% less than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality.

Q: Do lab-grown diamonds look the same as natural diamonds?
A: Yes, lab-grown and natural diamonds share nearly identical physical, chemical, and optical properties. Gemologists use specialized equipment (like microscopes and spectrometers) to distinguish between lab-grown and natural diamonds based on growth patterns and trace elements. However, to the naked eye, they appear identical.

Q: Will lab-grown diamonds hold their value over time?
A: The resale value of lab-grown diamonds is generally lower than natural diamonds, influenced by several factors. Factors such as market stability, consumer perception, and the availability of resale channels also play crucial roles in determining the resale value of lab-grown diamonds.

In conclusion, before investing in a lab-grown or natural diamond, people must consider these factors. Both are beautiful options that the individual will treasure for years to come!
